Getting started with Excel

Excel is used by millions of people around the world. Excel can be used for personal use or business.
Excel has grown over the years. Whether you are using it for simple task or more complicated task, excel is a great tool to have around.

This Excel Basics section will cover 3 things:
1. Customizing the Ribbon.
2. Adding/Summing Cells.
3. List of commonly used shortcut keys in Excel.

1. Ribbon:
The excel ribbon is located at the top of your excel spreadsheet. The ribbon can be customized to your needs.

To customize the ribbon, click anywhere in the ribbon. Then click on “Customize the Ribbon”:

When the customize ribbon box pulls up, you can move commands from the left side of the box to the right side of the box.

2. Adding/Summing Cells:
There are 2 different ways that you can add cells together. The first example uses a formula that adds each cell together. We will be adding cells C1, D1 & E1. The answer will be in cell F1

The other way to add the cells together is to use the SUM function. This will be the most useful way of adding multiple cells together that are in a straight row or straight column.

So, in the first example, we entered =C1+D1+E1 into the F1 cell
In the second example, we entered =SUM(C1:E1) into the F1 cell
